I actually did this poem already, but I deleted it because it wasn’t just about that. Trials of a Hummingbird was written a couple of days before my 21st birthday. It was during my junior year in college. I was one of those “do what you know” kind of people because growing up I was surrounded by all types of people doing all types of things. I never wanted to get into the things they were into…but I’d be lying if some things didn’t seem fun. So that year, I vowed 21 would be a year of doing what I never do. Nothing too crazy, but that year I drank for the first time, made out with a stranger (who was an A1 kisser btw, high five me), got a lap dance, hit on a couple of guys, tutored the hell out of some kids (college students in the same class as me 🤦🏾♀️), made a couple of amazing, wrong decisions, and just enjoyed the idea of not knowing what my next move was going to be.
